Featured Image: Blue River

And now for something completely different …After many years in storage, my big bucket of acrylic paints came back into the light of day. I was feeling the need to experiment more spontaneously with colour and texture and so I turned again to painting. I have a number of canvases in progress right now, so check back in the all-new Paintings gallery on the siteThis month’s image is Blue River:

Blue River (2006)

On a recent trip to Venice, I captured many images of texture and colour, of splendour and decay. These images will soon find their way onto this site and into prints, but I wanted to use texture more literally, more tangibly, and also to try and recreate some of the intensity of colour I saw in that city.Venice is also a city of great art, especially modern and contemporary art. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is a partcularly fine example, and there are also numerous contemporary galleries along the narrow, medieval streets. It was a series of paintings in a tiny courtyard that really inspired me to pick up a brush again. Whoever that artist was, I thank them.
